Greens to Join Antiwar Protests Around the U.S., March 17 and 18

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Green Party members will participate in protests across the U.S. on Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18, demanding withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. 

The protests include a ‘March to the Pentagon’ www.marchonpentagon.org organized by the ANSWER Coalition, an event that will also commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1967 March on the Pentagon against the Vietnam War, as well as the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the current war. Participants will assemble at 12 noon at 23rd Street and Constitution Avenue NW in Washington, DC.

In 2004 and 2006, the Green Party ran a ‘Peace Slate’ of Green candidates for public office.  The Green Party of the United States has strongly opposed the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq, and sharply criticized both Democrats and Republicans for transferring Congress’s constitutional war powers to the White House in October, 2002, which facilitated the Bush Administration’s deceptive justifications for the war and other abuses of power. 

Greens have called for immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops and are urging Congress to cutoff funding for the war to compel President Bush to order the safe return of U.S. military personnel. Greens have also called for impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney for high crimes and misdemeanors in relation to the war and numerous violations of the U.S. Constitution, and are calling on Congress to prevent President Bush from launching a military assault on Iran.  For information about the Green Party’s Peace Action Committee (GPAX), visit www.gp.org/committees/peace/.
