NEW YORKERS AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY

**JOIN US FOR A NEIGHBORHOOD ABOLITION CONFERENCE CALL!
Abolitionists:
Your letters, calls, and faxes on behalf of Troy Davis have overwhelmed the Board of Pardons and Parole in Georgia this past Monday, and have made a tremendous difference!!! Troy, who was to die on Tuesday by lethal injection, was granted a 90-day stay of execution!! Thank you for all your efforts!!!
Of course, we’re not out of the woods yet, and the stay only means the execution will be on hold while the board weighs the evidence presented as part of Davis’ request for clemency. The board must rule by Oct. 14.
I’ll keep you up to date on Troy’s case and how we are going to make sure that he receives the clemency he deserves
But even as we achieved a step towards victory with Troy, a possible innocent on death row, the New York State Senate on Monday went against convention, and actually chose to vote for the SAME BILL for the death penalty that they voted on only a few weeks ago! This bill was passed by YOUR senators allegedly in “response” to the murder of a young Brooklyn police officer.
This is simply a disrespectful manipulation of a tragic situation to gain political points. State Senators Golden and Volker do not acknowledge FBI reports that show North East has the lowest rate of police homicide, while the South has the highest, even though 80% of executions occur in the South! They do not acknowledge that the majority of police
chiefs nation-wide do NOT think the death penalty is a deterrent!
**JOIN AN NYADP SUMMER CONFERENCE CALL (FROM YOUR HOME) TO DISCUSS WITH OTHER ABOLITIONISTS FROM YOUR AREA WAYS IN WHICH WE CAN BETTER WORK TOWARDS ENDING THE DEATH PENALTY!****
WE NEED “CONFERENCE” MEMBERS! ALL YOU DO IS:
SET A DATE YOU WANT TO STRATEGIZE. SET A TIME.
LET ME KNOW WHAT NEIGHBORHOOD YOU REPRESENT.
I’ll set up the conference.

Let’s build the abolition community. It will take a community, not individuals, to end the death penalty.
In peace,
Colleen
