Wed Aug 27 Lakeside Theatre Hosts Third Annual Harry Chapin Tribute on

In July of 1981, folk singer and activist Harry Chapin died in an auto accident on the way to perform at Eisenhower Park. This summer, on Monday, August 27, at 7:30 p.m., two dozen of Long Island’s top singer-songwriters will again gather in Eisenhower Park to pay tribute to Chapin at the outdoor theater that bears his name, announced Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi.

“We are very fortunate that such a fine group of accomplished musicians have donated their time and talent to honor Harry Chapin, a Long Island icon,” says Suozzi. “It offers us an excellent opportunity to enjoy a unique evening of entertainment, while supporting a very worthy cause.”

Admission to the concert is free, but concert-goers are asked to bring donations of non-perishable food for Long Island Cares and cash donations for World Hunger Year, charities founded by Chapin.

The concert, organized by Malverne singer-songwriter Stuart Markus, is the third annual assemblage of Chapin’s friends and admirers at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre in Eisenhower Park. The performers hope to top the success of last year’s concert, which drew a crowd of 3,000 and raised more than 1,000 pounds of food. The concerts have raised a total of approximately 1.25 tons of food.

World Hunger Year Executive Director Bill Ayres, who co-founded the organization with Chapin, is expected to be on hand at the concert along with representatives from both charities, to assist with collections. Members of the Island Songwriters Showcase, a workshop group that traces its roots back to Chapin’s living room get-togethers in the 1970s, are also planning to volunteer.

The slate of participating musicians and bands includes Markus (who has achieved local fame as the balladeer of Long Island groundhog Malverne Mel); husband-and-wife team Tom Griffith and Martha Trachtenberg; Judith Zweiman; members of the Defibrillators and Tornado Alley; Frank Walker; Robin Eve; Terry Winchell; Doc Butler & JC Cob; Josh Joffen; Folk Fiction; Wonderous Stories; Cathy Kreger; MediaCrime; Debra Lynne; Doug Kwartler; Seth Davis; Ed Ryan; and Glen Roethel.

Lakeside Theatre is located near parking fields 6 and 6A. Special accommodations are available for disabled patrons, including reserved parking, easily accessible restrooms, and a convenient reserved location on the hill. Assistive hearing devices are available for the hearing impaired. There is no formal seating at Lakeside Theatre, so concert-goers are urged to bring folding chairs. If weather conditions are doubtful, call (516) 572-0355 after 7 p.m. for updated performance information.

Eisenhower Park is located in East Meadow with entrances on Hempstead Turnpike at East Meadow Avenue and at the intersection of Stewart and Merrick avenues For more information, call the Public Information at 516-572-0200 weekdays during business hours.

To get to Eisenhower Park, take the Meadowbrook Parkway to Exit 3 (Stewart Avenue) or Exit 4 (Hempstead Turnpike). All evening concerts and movies are held at the Lakeside Theatre. Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted; movies begin at dusk. For these events use Parking Fields 6 & 6A.

All noontime concerts are held in the shady area near Parking Fields 6 & 6A. A Leisure Passport is required.

Sun Aug 24 at 2pm  The Defibrillators – (Bayard Cutting Arboretum)  Aging Baby Boomers now have a band whose music reflects their refusal to grow old gracefully. The Defibrillators poke good-natured fun at the foibles of aging in their contagious blues-based rock originals. Billing themselves as “the World’s Oldest Boy Band”, The Defibs show they can kick it as energetically as (if not as high as) any of the young whippersnapper bands making the scene. Sonny Meadows on lead vocals and harmonica, Sonny Speed on keyboards, “Pops” Westcott on guitar, Dr. “Max” Foreman on guitar, “Buddy Boy” Cattrano on bass and Robert Langley on drums. $ 6 per car parking fee

Tues Aug 28 at 12:30pm Terry Winchell & Suzanne Mueller – (Bay Shore Band Shell)  This singer-songwriter’s original songs and beautiful voice complement her creative musicianship, taking her inspiration from the world around her, and infusing her ever-present positive attitude into her compositions. Her vocal style blends the elegance of k. d. laing with the soft honesty of Trisha Yearwood. As a participant in the Spirit Aid Festival in Glasgow, and the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, and the Roots 2 the Future tour in, Terry has cultivated a following in Europe, and her songs are heard on broadcast and internet radio stations both here and abroad.

Tues Aug 26 at 12:30pm  Gail Storm – (Bay Shore Band Shell)  A beloved favorite of good-time blues aficionados. This engaging and memorable blues and jazz pianist plays barrelhouse piano and sings women’s blues with equal ease. Gail is an elegant vocalist specializing in boogie-woogie and swingin’ blues with influences from early women’s blues, New Orleans jazz, and jump blues. Her rootsy style reflects her love of early jazz greats such as Louis Jordan, Oscar Peterson and Bessie Smith. Gail is a native southerner, but she moved to Huntington in the 1990s because of its thriving music scene.

Sat Aug 30 at 6pm  Tornado Alley – (Gardiner County Park – Music at Twilight – Concerts begin at 6 PM.) Five piece acoustic band featuring multi-voice harmony. Tornado Alley enjoys blending many acoustic sounds from across America, writing fresh new songs that feel as if you already know them. The band features four of Long Island’s acclaimed singer/songwriters and a respected session drummer who all have been playing the local scene for some time: Sonny Speed on mandolin, guitars, melodica and vocals, Vinny Crici on guitar, mandolin, bass and vocals, Tim Huss on guitar, bass and vocals, Lora Kendall on fiddle and vocals and Rob Langley on percussion and vocals.

Sun Aug 31 at 2pm  Lil’ Cliff & the Cliffhangers – (Bayard Cutting Arboretum) Harmonica-driven swinging blues: Lil’ Cliff on vocals & harmonica, Rick Street on vocals and upright bass, Dennis Phelps on vocals and guitar and Frank Patterson on drums. After winning the regional 2006 International Blues Challenge competition, these four professionals then took their special brand of original jump blues down to Memphis, TN to compete in the annual International Blues Challenge, which is the world’s largest gathering of blues musicians. And wouldn’t you know it, out of literally hundreds of blues artists from all over the world, the boys placed in the final top ten! $ 6. per car parking fee

The Museum’s Largest Fundraiser

SATURDAY, AUGUST 23 and SUNDAY, AUGUST 24This festival is the largest single fundraising event for the Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville, Long Island, NY. The Museum is dedicated to the preservation of Long Island’s rich maritime history and heritage for educational purposes. This year, the 17th Annual Long Island Maritime Museum Seafood, Craft and Music Festival will take place on Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24, 2008, beginning at 10:00 AM and ending at 7:00 PM sharp each day. The Festival features its indoor and outdoor museum exhibits, as well as over 150 vendors of fine nautical arts and crafts and educational groups, and – of course – huge pavilions purveying some of the finest and freshest seafood available. Last year, the festival hosted over 18,000+ people! Music has become a huge highlight of this weekend event, featuring the best national and regional acts.

Music has become a major focal point of this festival and this year’s no exception. There will be an eclectic mix of music, sure to appeal to a broad audience. The festival is proud to announce a very special, homegrown-centered and local musical lineup featuring Jon Paris , Blues Rock Legend and Jacks Waterfall (a musical adventure in pop, blues, jazz and global folk) on Saturday. Sunday is featuring Lucky Star (Bluegrass Celtic Rock) and Karma Sutra (an exciting mix of reggae, Grateful Dead and some originals). Bradstock hopes all the past volunteers will be back this year and, of course, everyone is encouraged to help out with Bradstock.  Bradstock’s Tuesday meetings will be starting up shortly (old web info) and it takes a lot of work to make Bradstock such a great event. Please try to give us some of your time before, during, and after the event.

Bradstock need your help! It takes a lot of help from people like you to make Bradstock happen. If you can help with preparations for Bradstock, give Bradstock a call or attend our weekly Tuesday meetings at 7:00 pm at the Maritime Museum.  Bradstock also need help with setting up the stage, helping the day of the event, and our yearly post-Bradstock clean up on the days after the event. Please give Bradstock a few hours of your time.

Bradstock will be donating to the Maritime Museum again. In addition to providing the site, the museum contributes to many environmental and historical groups concerned with the Great South Bay.

Bradstock will also be contributing to Island Harvest through our annual food drive. Island Harvest helps local food pantries in their mission to assist the less fortunate on our Island. Please bring some non-perishable food for our food drive.

Bradstock will have food vendors, but you’re welcome to bring your own  Please, no grills or open fires and no glass containers. Of course, Bradstock will be providing beer, water and soft drinks for all attending. (DOES THIS MEAN WE CAN’T BRING OUR OWN WATER BOTTLES and have to buy from them?)

Children accompanied by a donating adult are always welcome at Bradstock, with no minimum donation required.

Bradstock is a Pet-Free event. Please don’t bring your pet!
