Campaign Update.
Hello Powerful People:
Defeat the Bailout,
Build the Campaign for McKinney-Clemente
On Monday, the House of Representatives voted to defeat the Bush-Pelosi $700 billion Wall Street bailout plan. A bipartisan ‘compromise’, the bill would nationalize the risks, but not the profits, for those bankers who who have speculated in the home-mortgage ‘market’ as the ranks of our homeless has continued to grow. By a vote of 206 to 227, the House defeated the bill — with 94 Democrats and 133 Republicans voting against the bailout plan in response to massive public outcry.
In the clamour of this proposed $700 billion theft, no one is discussing the $81 billion for AIG last week. No one has stopped any home foreclosures. And demonstrating again the willingness to use the threat of capital flight to shape public policy, the market took its largest dive in history, plummeting 777 points on the Dow in a single day. But the sun rose again, anyway.
$700 billion of taxpayer funds Bush-Pelosi would spend subsidizing the criminal actions in our financial markets denies the American people the resources needed to address urgent human needs for housing, healthcare, education and the rebuilding of our infrastructure. We simply cannot allow this to continue. Calls in to Congressional offices on the bailout have run ’30 to 1′ up to ‘100 to 1’ in opposition. But public opposition alone did not stop NAFTA, GATT or the war in Iraq. And it won’t stop this, either. The House intends to try again this Thursday.
Please use this opportunity to not just urge your friends and neighbors to call their Congressional office. Use this opportunity to inspire folks that it does not need to be like this. Remind them that both corporate party candidates support passage. Let them know about the contrasting policies advanced by the Mckinney-Clemente campaign:
A Gift for a Generation: A U.S. Financial System of Our Own
Let folks know that their vote matters!
Educate folks about the meaning of a 5% return in November, the value of ballot access for continuing our vital work (which will not end when the polls close), of the necessity for building our capacity for political independence. Urge those you discuss these things with to volunteer with and contribute to this campaign.
Until next time,
— The Campaign Team
