Media Advisory – Black students to host Cynthia McKinney and call for freedom, justice and equality for all TORONTO, April 16 /CNW/ – York University Black Students’ Alliance will hold a film screening, conference and gala with 2008 Green Party nominee for President of the United States Cynthia McKinney from Thursday, April 30 to Sunday, May 3, 2009. This year’s theme focuses on Black students’ leadership roles in ensuring freedom, justice and equality for Black people worldwide and for all. Organizers will draw attention to the critical need for greater access to power for Black people in Canada and the United States with much needed economic development in the Black community. In the month of January, the United States and the world celebrated the inauguration of America’s first African-American president Barack Obama. In Canada the likelihood of a Black Prime Minister is bleak considering the lack of Blacks in the halls of power. Unemployment rates amongst Canadian-born Blacks and foreign Blacks continue to be higher than for all Canadians, 7.9% and 9.6%, respectively. People coming from low-income and marginalized communities already face significant barriers to meaningful employment and job security. In the context of a failing economy, the federal and provincial governments have a key role to play in ensuring equality for all. SPEAKER: Cynthia McKinney is a former United States Representative and was the 2008 Green Party nominee for President of the United States. Her political career began in 1986 in the Georgia House of Representatives. On December 30, 2008, McKinney was aboard the ship Dignity as it attempted to enter the Gaza Strip, which had its coastal area declared a “closed military zone” by Israel, while on a humanitarian mission by the Free Gaza Movement from Cyprus. She urged for President Obama to say something about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and admonished the Congress to stop sending weapons of mass destruction around the world.
