The “Friend” of Latinos Jokes about Deporting Kitchen Workers
According to Newsday, last week at Captain Bill’s restaurant in Bay Shore, the Suffolk County Executive inquired about the immigration status of a supporter. When the supporter responded that he was a naturalized U.S. citizen, the County Executive replied good or “… I’d have to deport you, like the guys in the kitchen.”
“Not even a year has passed since the murderous attack on Marcelo Lucero, a Latino worker, and the Suffolk County Executive jokes about deporting kitchen workers.” said Nadia Marin-Molina of the Workplace Project. “How can he ask us to believe that he is a friend?” The county executive has been interviewed recently in Spanish language media saying that he is a “friend” to the Latino community.
“We are tired of all of the rhetoric. The denigration of Latinos, even in jest, has real negative consequences,” said Luis Valenzuela, of the Long Island Immigrant Alliance . “Comedy too often serves to keep stereotypes alive.”
Please join us this Wednesday to let Levy know that he is not acting like a friend.
