Wednesday night I went to an excellent program put on by an alliance of Long Island peace groups. The event is The Great South Bay Forum, held at the Bar Harbor, Massapequa Library (There is more than one library in Massapequa! So, careful with the GPS programming!) The program included a showing of some of the movie “Pete Seeger: The Power of Song”. It’s a great movie from 2007. It has archival footage of Pete’s testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee and other great stuff. The film truly showed how music energized and organized the peace, labor and civil rights movements over time.
The video is from a sing-a-long with: Father Bill Brisotti on banjo, Andy Greenhouse on guitar and Richard Barnhart on harmonica. The song is Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land”. It isn’t all the time that you can get a crowd singing along in Long Island. So, very exciting that they kept the audience involved as they sang all the regular and extra verses! Woody and Pete would be proud!
