Maxwell Corydon Wheat, Jr. is Poet Laureate emeritus of Nassau County. Max writes nature poetry, as well as poems about war and peace. His status as Poet Laureate was questioned by politicians afraid his poetry was too anti-war. Though, the poets of Long Island came together and awarded him the title themselves.
On February 5th, 2010, PeaceSmiths, a group which works on issues of peace, justice and the environment, held a “Bring-Your-Own-Poetry” set. As part of that sharing, Max read a poem he wrote for his wife, Virginia “Ginger” Wheat. The poem is a scene of Ginger swimming in the water at Jones Beach.
