For the most part, his role in the debate seemed to leave a good impression. The New York Times spoke of Hawkins’ “earnest pleas” and described him as a candidate who offered “substance.” Former Republican gubernatorial candidate John Faso was not so kind; when a post-debate caller to YNN offered praise for Hawkins, Faso used the word “lunacy” in speaking of some Green Party ideas. That’s fine with Hawkins, as long as Faso’s insult inspires voters to study his platform. Political coverage, Hawkins said, is too often akin to the judging on “American Idol.” He needs 50,000 votes to give the Green Party an automatic line on the ballot, and he’d like to think the easy laughs from the audience at Hofstra will give way to consideration of deeper points.
