Review of what’s happening: Julian Assange, an Australian citizen and a key player in the Wikileaks project, helped to publish previously confidential e-mails that embarrassed the United States military. While Assange was at the focus of political controversy, two women accused him sexual crimes, for which Sweden says he must answer. Assange, appearing suspicious of the timing of the charges and worried that it is a trick to get him deported to the US, is resisting extradition to Sweden. Assange is in England. The English Supreme Court ruled against him, and has set a date to deport him to Sweden. Assange fled to the embassy for Ecuador in London. CNN reports that Assange is probably still inside the embassy, awaiting an answer about if they will grant him political assylum.

Extradition deadline passes for WikiLeaks’ Assange
By Laura Smith-Spark / July 7, 2012
London (CNN) — A deadline for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to be extradited to Sweden for questioning in sexual assault allegations came and went Saturday with no apparent movement.
Assange is believed to still be inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he has been holed up since applying for political asylum on June 19.
The South American country has said it is considering his application…
“In accordance with the framework on European arrest warrants, the court’s decision means that Mr. Assange will be surrendered to Sweden within 10 days after the 14th day.”…
