Brainstorming Session: Who’s really sitting in Eastwood’s chair?

Jon Stewart

Comments on this post are especially invited. We want to hear your ideas on the internet sensation of the week!

Jon Stewart got us thinking about who was actually sitting in the empty chair that Clint Eastwood was talking to (or talking at) during the Republican Presidential Convention. Who did Jon Stewart say was in the chair?: “Invisible Obama”, whom only Republicans can see.

But, we are not sure that is entirely correct. Eastwood seemed to imply that the person who was sitting in that chair started the Afghanistan War. Wouldn’t that be George W.  Bush?

Eastwood is claiming that the person in that chair is responsible for the current surge in unemployment. Maybe all of the folks who make up the 1% were squished together in that chair?

Or, maybe the person sitting in the chair was “The Ghost of Democratic and Republican Presidents Past”?

Or, perhaps it is the snarky, arrogant “Spirit of the Two Party System”?

We had other guesses, just thinking about why there is usually an empty chair on the stage: Maybe the empty chair is for all the debates that the Republican and Democratic candidates will decline to attend this campaign season? Maybe the empty chair is for all the third party candidates, who would have liked to be at a debate, but won’t be invited because of the way the Dems and Reps have monopolized the Presidential Debate Commission, and stolen the task of organizing the debates from the League of Women Voters? Maybe the empty chair is for The League of Women voters, who won’t get to apply their objectivity and wisdom to the debate negotiations?

Or maybe the empty chair is for Jon Stewart, and other members of the corporate media. Jon Stewart ignores third party candidates and the alternative ideas they provide to the narrow pro-war perspective of the Democratic and Republican candidates.

Who do you think was sitting in the chair? Please put your best answers, with explanations in the comments.
