Hi everyone-

This has been a busy month for immigration reform advocates, and we’ve had lots of blog posts about President Obama’s (somewhat delayed) immigration meeting with Congressional leaders, as well as posts about legislative priorities like the DREAM Act.  Despite the president’s postponements, we still feel the time is right for change, and you should keep pressure on your federal elected officials to pass comprehensive immigration reform this year.

*Upcoming Events*

June 24, 2pm: The Suffolk County Special Task Force on Hate Crimes will hold its first meeting in the William H. Rogers Legislature Building ( 725 Veterans Memorial Highway, Smithtown).  The meeting, which is open to the public, will deal mainly with organizational issues, and plans for future meetings.  For more info, contact Renee Ortiz at 631-853-6351 or http://legis.suffolkcountyny.gov.

July 11, 10am-2pm: There will be a free Citizenship Forum at Suffolk County Community College ( Captree Commons Building , Crooked Hill Rd., Brentwood ) for all those interested in citizenship information.  Attendees can get assistance with the N-400 application, have an application reviewed by an immigration attorney, get passport photographs, or pick up USCIS New Naturalization Test Study materials.  For more information, call 888-839-8682 or visit yaeshora.info.

*Top Stories*     —Long Island Wins Has a New Staff Blogger (June 4):  Ted Hesson joins the Long Island Wins team as the new online editor.  Ted will manage the blog and will use social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to organize supporters and pass along immigration news.     —Conn. Judge Halts Deportation Hearings, Cites Miscounduct (June 8): Federal Judge Michael W. Straus stopped the deportation hearings of four men who had been arrested in a 2007 raid, saying that the immigrants’ rights were “egregiously violated” when Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers forcibly entered private homes without demonstrating probable cause.     —Need for Congress To Take a Stand Against Hate Crimes (June 10): The seven killings of immigrants in racially motivated attacks over the last year and the general upsurge in hate-based crimes has pushed Congress to consider strengthening federal penalties for bias crimes.  CARECEN’s Pat Young explains why it’s necessary.    —Anti-Latino Incident in Suffolk (June 13): A Latino immigrant family in Medford had trash dumped on their lawn with racist epithets written on some of it.    —La vida en estos Estados Unidos (June 15): Guest blogger Lance Mannion gives an in-depth comparison of two movies about immigration, Crossing Over and Chop Shop.     — Immigration 101-Temporary Protected Status (June 15): Pat Young continues his immigration primer with a lesson on immigrants who flee their homeland because of wars or natural disasters, but don’t qualify for refugee or asylee status.    — Minutemen Supporters Go Mute on Minutemistress Murderer (June 16): The arrest of three Minutemen for the murders of a Latino man and his 9-year-old daughter has led to a rewriting of history on anti-immigrant sites around the country. All of a sudden, no one knew the three killers, even though one of them was a prominent figure in the movement.

3. *Action Alert: Send a Fax for Reform*     Recently, Reform Immigration for America launched a campaign to send free faxes to elected officials.  Over 125,000 faxes have already been sent. As we wait for signs of movement from the President and Congress, take a moment to send a fax telling Congress: “It’s time to fix the broken immigration system. Pass comprehensive immigration reform this year!” Click here to take an easy and important action in support of reform.
