You can find the information at the weather service: here. Or, by calling the NY Air Quality hotline at: 1-800-535-1345 (which has interesting explanations about why this happens, and what you can do…)
For Friday, June 4, 2010, The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an air quality health advisory for the following counties…
(including)
SUFFOLK…NASSAU…RICHMOND…KINGS…QUEENS…NEW YORK…BRONX…WESTCHESTER…ROCKLAND.
AIR QUALITY LEVELS IN OUTDOOR AIR ARE PREDICTED TO BE GREATER THAN AN AIR QUALITY INDEX VALUE OF 100 FOR THE POLLUTANT OF OZONE
I believe this warning applies until 10pm tonight for the city, and 11pm for Long Island.
Evidently, this is especially a problem for people with respiratory issues.
