FREEDOM RIDERS Official Selection: Sundance Film Festival In May of 1961 a 23 day bus ride through America ’s Deep South became a horrific odyssey of violence and shame. Filmmaker Stanley Nelson’s documentary is a meticulously reconstructed journal chronicling the heroic expedition of the self proclaimed “freedom riders.” American citizens confronted fire hoses, baseball bats, fire bombs, and every kind of brutality for challenging the racist doctrines of segregation. Black and white images of the black and white protestors seem otherworldly, just as the black and white stripes worn by those unjustly held in a Mississippi penitentiary seem particularly ironic. When CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) first organized this non-violent program, few predicted that it would become as major a catalyst for the Civil Rights movement. Interviews include Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Young, and former Alabama Governor John Patterson.

NIGHT CATCHES US Sundance Film Festival Nominee: GRAND JURY PRIZE In 1976, after years of mysterious absence, Marcus (Anthony Mackie, The Hurt Locker) returns to the Philadelphia neighborhood where he came of age in the midst of the Black Power movement. While his arrival raises suspicion among his family and former neighbors, he finds acceptance from his old friend Patricia (Kerry Washington) and her daughter. However, Marcus quickly finds himself at odds with the organization he once embraced, whose members suspect he orchestrated the slaying of their former comrade-in-arms. In a startling sequence of events, Marcus must protect a secret that could shatter everyone’s beliefs as he rediscovers his forbidden passion for Patricia.

Directed by Tyler Perry (Diary of a Mad Black Woman) and adapted from Ntozake Shange’s Obie Award-winning play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, this film is a poetic exploration of what it is to be of color and female in this world. The story speaks as powerfully today as when it was first performed in New York in 1975. Exploring themes of love, abandonment, rape and abortion, the film’s outstanding ensemble cast deliver visceral and intense performances.
