About the talk:
New Yorker Jeffrey Deskovic was a child of 17 when a jury found him guilty of a murder he did not commit. If the jury knew then that DNA evidence did not match Deskovic, how did this happen? Why did it take 16 years and the intervention of the Innocence Project for him to be released? What does Jeffrey’s story mean for capital punishment in New York State? What can we do to ensure that more innocents like Jeffrey do not suffer wrongfully behind bars?

Directions: Long Island Expressway east to exit 34 (New Hyde Park Road). Go to the light and make a right onto New Hyde Park Road. At the 5th light, make a left onto Marcus Avenue. Immediately after the 3rd light, take the left fork and continue on Marcus Avenue until the next light. Make a half right onto Nassau Boulevard. Go straight 1.2 miles. The temple is on the right (corner of Nassau Blvd. and Newmarket Rd.). Parking is in the rear.
GOOD NEWS, AND A REQUEST FOR DIALOG WITH THE LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY
By now, you already know that the NYS Court of Appeals decided not to carve out an exception to its 2004 decision that the death penalty statute was unconstitutional or to reverse that decision. The asterisk next to our state’s name on the list of abolitionist states is now gone. This is for real!!!!
Thanks to everyone who has participated in the campaign to keep the death penalty out of New York. Two things had to happen for us to be where we are now. We had little if any control over the first one:
The Court had to uphold its 2004 decision. But on the second, the Assembly declining to pass a “quick fix”, success is thanks to individual death penalty opponents who, over and over again, let their Assembly members know how important this issue is to us.

What’s next? Senate Majority Leader Bruno promises to keep introducing reinstatement bills. We will have to keep reminding our own legislators that we are paying attention and expect them to do the right thing. Many proposed reinstatement bills apply specifically to murders of police and correctional officers. We are trying to reach out to the law enforcement community- active or retired police, correctional officers and prosecutors who have worked in New York. We believe that many people in this community agree with us that the death penalty is unwise public policy.
