Kimberly writes: I have been so saddened by the death of Amy Winehouse. I always did love her voice. Though, since I did not appreciate all the sentiments in her lyrics, I never focused on her so much. I did wonder what about the way her voice and music just woke me up and made me identify. I think part of it is similar to my appreciation of Jane Eyre. I just love strong, proud women with attitude. Today, as I was reading reflections on Amy Winehouse’s passing, I found some folks who were able to articulate more about the magic of Amy Winehouse’s music…
Quotes from an MTV story:
Lady Gaga posted: “Amy changed pop music forever. I remember knowing there was hope, and feeling not alone because of her. She lived jazz, she lived the blues.”
Russell Brand: “Entering the space I saw Amy on stage with [Paul] Weller and his band; and then the awe. The awe that envelops when witnessing a genius. From her oddly dainty presence that voice, a voice that seemed not to come from her but from somewhere beyond even Billie [Holiday] and Ella [Fitzgerald], from the font of all greatness. A voice that was filled with such power and pain that it was at once entirely human yet laced with the divine. My ears, my mouth, my heart and mind all instantly opened … So now I knew. She wasn’t just some hapless wannabe, yet another pissed up nit who was never gonna make it, nor was she even a ten-a-penny-chanteuse enjoying her fifteen minutes. She was a f—ing genius.”

P.S. Notice that Russell Brand’s comments are about seeing Amy on stage with other great musicians. That is part of why she was the real deal, and part of a jazz scene. Amy Winehouse knew it was not about one person and a voice, she surrounded herself with excellent musicians. I love how her stage sets and her videos reflect an appreciation of the instrumentalists around her.
