I thought you might like to know about a few good acoustic music happenings on Long Island this week.
Thursday, February 14 , 2008 The Babylon Village Arts Council presents a free concert featuring Twilight Hotel, a wonderful young Winnipeg, Alberta-based duo whose sound combines rootsy blues, folk and European accordion-influenced cabaret. Twilight Hotel (Dave Quanbury & Brandy Zdan) are among the Folk Alliance’s nominees for Emerging Artists of the Year and were featured performers in the AcousticMusicScene.com Showcase that Glen Roethel and I hosted during last November’s Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) Conference. Their performance is set for 7:30 p.m. at Astoria Federal Savings Bank, 180 West Main Street in Babylon Village.
Friday, February 15, 2008 Our Times Coffeehouse hosts a Bob Dylan Song Contest featuring 10 local artists performing their own renditions of Dylan compositions. Audience members will help decide the winners. The music and fun get under way at 8 p.m. at the Ethical Humanist Society, 38 Old Country Road, Garden City. Tickets are $15. www.ourtimescoffeehouse.org
Saturday, February 16, 2008 The Folk Music Society of Huntington’s Hard Luck Cafe features a pairing of two talented emerging artists who shared the stage during a song swap at last summer’s Huntington Folk Festival. Danielle Miraglia, a soulful singer-songwriter and Delta blues-influenced guitarist from the Boston area, and Phil Minissale, the finger-pickin’ good Long Island Blues Boy, will each perform 45-minute sets at the Congregational Church of Huntington, 30 Washington Drive, Centerport. The concert is preceded by an hour-long open mic that starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10; $7 for FMSH members. www.fmshny.org
I hope to see you at one or more of these concerts. Additional information on these and other acoustic music gigs and happenings in Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn & Queens — along with photos of several artists — appears in the AcoustiCalendar section of AcousticMusicScene.com.
