Unique not only on Long Island , The Homegrown String Band has a configuration that is highly uncommon in 21st century. As an incarnation of the traditional American family band, the Homegrowns perform old-time and original music, and they throw in some pretty astounding flatfoot dancing for good measure. Gathered around a single microphone, in the manner of the early balladeer bands, this irresistible family band delves deep into the well of American sounds, from the driving rhythms of old-time dance tunes to venerable country blues tunes to the mournful ballads that were so often heard in 19th century parlors.
Father Rick leads his family on vocals, guitar and banjo, mother Georgianne keeps time with mandolin, banjo-uke and mountain dulcimer, older daughter Erica swings her fiddle, and younger daughter Annalee sings, plays mandolin and harmonica, and ably demonstrates why she is the most renowned jaw-harp player on Long Island .
They have appeared at a number of festivals throughout the Northeast, including Wind Gap and the New England Folk Festival, as well as performing at such notable venues as Club Passim in Boston, the legendary Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, the Purple Fiddle in West Virginia and five days of performances at the Festival of American Music in Branson, Missouri. The Homegrown String Band is also the subject of an independent documentary film produced by Mythopoetika Studios.
