On September 16 the Long Island Immigrant Alliance (LIIA) encourages all supporters of immigrant rights to turn out at the Suffolk Legislature. Over the last seven months we have seen the Legislature spend much of its time viewing immigration through a negative lens. On September 16 we want to show them what a real discussion on immigration looks like.
The day, themed “Building an Island of Opportunity, Long Islanders Take Action on Immigration Policy” will inform the legislators about the realities of immigrant life in Suffolk, highlight the contributions of immigrants, and describe ways that the county can work to fully incorporate immigrants into civic life.
We encourage all on this list to attend the legislative day, and, if you desire, to speak at the legislature.
The day will begin at 8:45AM with a rally outside the legislative building, followed by a press conference at 9AM. at 9:30 we will go into the legislature and our supporters will speak during the “public portion” of the session. The event will conclude at around 1PM.
We are looking for supporters to make brief three minute presentations on the following subjects:
- Immigrants and Housing
- Immigrants and Labor
- Due Process and Fairness for Immigrants
- Characteristics of LI’s Immigrant Community
- Language Access in Health Care
- Immigrant Businesses
- How Immigrants Help LI’s Businesses
If you, or someone you know would like to speak on one of these issues, please let me know.
Please let your friends and members know about this important event. We need to show strength.
