Nassau plans aerial spraying for Wednesday evening
BY WILLIAM MURPHY AND DAVID J. LOPEZ
Nassau County has rescheduled aerial spraying against mosquitoes that carry West Nile for Wednesday evening, beginning at about 6:30 p.m., the county’s health department announced.
If weather conditions are not favorable on Wednesday, spraying will occur on Thursday, beginning no earlier than 9 p.m., the county said. Weather conditions for both days are favorable, according to the health department.
Any cancellation will be posted on www.nassaucountyny.gov/agencies/health/ …
Several environmental and breast cancer groups have called the plan an ineffectual and dangerous response to controlling the spread of West Nile.
New York State Health Department recommends that residents take the following steps during spraying:
Children and pregnant women should take care to avoid exposure.
Stay inside, or avoid the area whenever spraying takes place, and for about 30 minutes afterward.
Close windows and doors and turn off window air conditioners or close their vents to circulate indoor air before spraying begins. Windows and air-conditioning vents can be reopened about 30 minutes afterward.
Protect your eyes. If you get pesticide in your eyes, immediately rinse them with water. Wash exposed skin. Wash clothes that come in direct contact with spray separately from other items.
Consult your health care provider if you think you are experiencing health effects. If spraying just occurred, minimize your contact with outdoor surfaces and wash skin that has come in contact with these surfaces.
Pick fruits and vegetables you expect to eat soon before spraying takes place. Rinse homegrown produce thoroughly with water before cooking or eating.
Cover outdoor tables and play equipment before spraying or wash them off with detergent and water after they have been sprayed.
Bring laundry and small toys inside (wash with detergent and water if exposed during spraying).
Bring pet food and water dishes inside, and cover ornamental fish ponds to avoid direct exposure.
