Please read the Newsday story linked below, which has a lot of important information and background of the day of Marcelo Lucero’s killing; the actions of the police department in promoting a Hispanic police officer to lead in the 5th precinct which covers Patchogue; and the reactions – mixed – of the community to that gesture.
I find it interesting that the headline and beginning of the story focused on what the police department is trying to do “to make amends” and “do better next time.” But, buried in the story is the horrifying fact that police officers may have wrongly let two of the attackers free earlier in the day, when the boys had been shooting a bebe gun at another Hispanic man. There is an investigation into that incident.
