It’s our 10th anniversary! We’re celebrating 10 years of YES! in our latest issue featuring the 10 most hopeful trends from the last 10 years. In these troubled times, the Spring issue offers you the evidence that in every sector of society, there are people doing the creative work of making our world more just, sustainable, and compassionate.
You can find all 10 trends in the current issue of YES!, available on newsstands and at our Web site http://www.yesmagazine.org/. And for each of these hopeful trends we are offering related stories from 10 years of YES! that show that not only is a better world possible, it is coming into being.
Here are a few of the trends featured in the Spring issue of YES!:
- Active non-violence is becoming a powerful alternative to regional and global violence. Courageous people the world over are fighting injustice through increasingly sophisticated means. One tool they are using is Compassionate Listening — a practice that involves careful listening by which all sides learn from each other, as described in a 1998 story.
- Community sustainability is blooming amidst our endangered landscape. Bill McKibben finds hope for the planet in some unlikely places — such as Detroit and Salina, Kansas. Urban farms and petroleum-free farming are just a couple of the signs that sustainability is catching on in urban and rural settings alike. At our Web site, you can also find McKibben’s earlier story on Curitiba, Brazil, a city with little economic strength that became a global model for sustainability. Imagine an urban center in southern Brazil where fast and efficient public transportation serves more riders than New York City.
- Democracy is finding defenders across the political spectrum. Democracy in the US may belong in intensive care after the elections of 2000 and 2004, the falsehoods that led up to the Iraq War, the lobbying scandal, the list goes on. But pro-democracy movements are linking up to clean up the voting system, speak truth to power, press for publicly funded campaigns, and more. Look through related stories online and you’ll find the tale of a 2002 electoral triumph in Selma, Alabama, where residents defeated the politics of fear and finally ended the grip of a Jim Crow-era mayor.
