Hello friends,
I’ll make this as short as possible:
Friends has adopted a one-half mile stretch of Long Island Avenue (north side along the Edgewood Preserve perimeter) as an attempt to reduce litter along that part of the road and to help beautify an otherwise ugly stretch of road. Our Adopt A Spot sign will be going up soon on Long Island Avenue — look for it if over that way! We have big plans for this road, hoping to work with the NYS DEC to install a new, secure fence on the north side and to work with the Town of Babylon to install down lighting and perhaps a safe place for pedestrians and cyclists to walk or ride to the LIRR station. Any ideas that any of you may have to improve the road (without cutting down any trees, that is) — please! let me know.
This SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, from 12pm to 4pm, volunteers will be clearing the area of litter and cutting back weeds and getting the area ready for planting bulbs.
Next SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, from 12pm to 4pm, we will be digging holes/trenches and planting hundreds of daffodil bulbs and covering spots with mulch at various points along the road. Just think how wonderful the road will look come May when these yellow flowers come up and bloom!
We need LOTS of help on both days, so please consider stopping by for an hour or so on one or both days – to pitch in and get this project going. Bring friends! It will be fun.
We urge you not to bring really young children, unless you are prepared to supervise them the entire time. Long Island Avenue is a narrow road and all volunteers must wear an orange safety vest and there will be orange cones in the road to keep cars a good distance from our work area. We suggest that you park in the Home Depot lot (northwest side of lot), then cross Long Island Avenue at the light, and head east (you will see us set up right after the Dunkin Donuts and first business along Long Island Avenue (1095 Long Island Avenue). Entire walk should take not even five minutes.
We have gloves, bags and other supplies, but if you want to bring your own gloves, please do so. We will also likely have coffee, donuts and water available.
Hope to see you on the 10th and 17th! Any questions, call or e-mail me.
Cheers and thanks,
Patricia Burkhart
