LI WINS: Action Alert for tommorrow, Tues. June 10th

****ACTION ALERT****

Speak out at the Suffolk County Legislature meeting TOMORROW, Tuesday, June 10th at 9am against Jon Cooper’s bill, IR1479, that would authorize an 18-month pilot program for contractors in Suffolk County to verify their workers status using the controversial e-verify system. Top 3 Reasons to Speak Against E-Verify:

1. E-Verify suffers from high error rate that disproportionately impacts foreign born Americans and women

2. Hearings on e-verify earlier this month prompted a New York Times Editorial to warn that the burdens imposed by the new system threaten to overwhelm the Social Security Administration at a time when it has a backlog of over half-a-million cases

3. Moreover, a permanent E-Verify systems represent a path to a national ID card that will lead to the tracking of American’s lawful activities

If you can not make it to speak in person at the legislature tomorrow it is still important to let your legislator know how you feel about this issue. For your legislators contact information visit http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/legis/ . We are also one-step away from e-verify being required for all Suffolk County contractors in a new bill, IR 1538, also introduced by Legislator Jon Cooper and a public hearing is scheduled for later in June. We need to make our voices heard NOW against Suffolk County using the e-verify system!

Today, Long Island Wins sent the Legislators of Suffolk County a compilation of studies, all of which found e-verify to be deficient and faulted. Click here for LI Wins letter to the legislators and compilation of studies. As always, please visit the blog or contact us at longislandwins@gmail.com for more information. Hope to see you tomorrow at the legislature.
