every great river knows
that many sources
seek a common path
raging together
until they reach exit 39
one springs from the search
for the royalty of spirit
seductions djembes and dumbeks
where dancers rise from the go-round
and the lion
ends the nights
another flows across three counties
searching for acoustic poetry
to the garden of my birth
the vault of someone’s livingroom
only to find William Burroughs’ Kansas
waiting in my desk drawer
all the time
paths cross
at a show of ghosts and cats
where drummers are isolated
horns aloft
the distant brought near
into a competition
we didn’t choose
but were chosen for
the lion drives with his knees
and rolls parchment between his fingers
the trunk is filled with
symbols and guitars
the eagle and the bear
wear Dead bootlegs
stories of unknown meeting
unroll from the silent
a rockumentary scene
on a spaghetti budget
second hand luxury
west we pass exit 39
