“It started when I was a kid. I was a big fan of Willie Mays and when he moved to San Francisco and wanted to move into a white neighborhood, he couldn’t,” Hawkins said. “I thought that was stupid. Who wouldn’t want Willie Mays for a neighbor? A few years later I was trying to sign up adults to register to vote.”
If Hawkins can pull in adults to vote for the Green Party this year — 50,000 of them — the party will be assured a ballot line for the next election. Without it, party leaders will have to gather signatures.
