The Orange President put on a horrible show of bullying, lies, and con-artistry at the Joint Session — which was pretty much expected by any enlightened people and Democrats.
But, what had we done to prepare?
We did not prepare in the best way. I was as guilty as the next person. I was dying for some Democratic elected to see my ideas and opinions on my social media posts. What was I thinking?
This is no time for decorum and good manners. This is no time to be asking your representatives to express their frustration with signs, or boycotts, or even theatrics. This was the time for us — the people — to show up in person and take the lead.
I am pretty good at keeping up with the protest and boycott schedule. Or, at least hearing about things as they stream by in the last few weeks. But, I had not heard of a call for regular people or progressive people to go to DC and be near the scene of Tr*mp’s crime as he spoke. Maybe I missed it?
But, next time I hear Tr*mp is doing a Joint Session, or a State of the Union, or even a walk over to the Capitol, I will be going down to DC, and getting as close as I am allowed and chanting as loud as I can! And, I hope some of our major activist and protest groups will follow Tr*mp better next time, too!
Here is what I posted on Reddit. (I wished I had posted it in the lead-up, and not after-the-fact. But, after-the-fact is when it dawned on me!)
<<We missed our chance! I realized in the middle of the night last night what our mistake was. So many of us progressives, socialists, and greens kept asking what the Democratic elected were doing and should do. We should have had a ring of thousands of people around the perimeter. We should have been chanting as loud as we could from the outside. So, for next time: As soon as Tr*mp announces a Joint Session or a campaign stop or a walk over to the Capitol, we need to spring into action right away and BE THERE! In person! Our bodies are our power. We cannot rely on the old processes, the old manners, the old ways. America is on fire. Democracy is on fire. We are the leaders we’ve been waiting for!>>
