Wednesday, October 28th, 7:00pm, Southampton High School Auditorium – “Why We Migrate: Stories of Mexico’s Displaced” An Evening With Ana Maria Garcia. Ana Maria is an activist from Oaxaca, Mexico. She works with family farmers and indigenous communities to confront the root problem of migration. She co-founded the non-profit EDUCA to defend the rights the rights of the marginalized in Oaxaca. She has acted as a consultant for the U.N. on development programs in indigenous communities (a cause near and dear to my heart). Find out why millions make the unlikely decision to leave their communities to live in a country with increasing anti-immigrant hostility and why the number of Mexicans who made this decision more than doubled after the implementation of NAFTA. This special evening is part of a speaking tour organized by Witness For Peace. It is sponsored locally by OLA of Eastern Long Island, Eastern Long Island NAACP and Shinnecock Tribal Council. This is a great event for people are unsure about their feelings on immigration. Ana Maria will share her first-hand experience and provide information that most people are unaware of or know little about.

Saturday, November 7th, 6:00pm, Patchogue – It has been one year since the brutal murder of Marcelo Lucero. Marcelo’s family asks everyone to join them to remember Marcelo through peace and inclusion. There will be a community vigil and healing service to bring everyone together. As you all know this event has changed my life the last year and probably forever. It would mean an enormous amount to me personally if you would attend. Joselo, Marcelo’s brother, is one of the most amazing people I have ever met. I can only wish that if I was ever put in a similar circumstance, that I could remain as strong and dignified as him. Please note that the Lucero family is asking all those who attend to wear white to show solidarity and peace. Below is a message from Joselo and the Reverend Dwight Wolter about the vigil and healing service:
Vigil in Memory of Marcelo Lucero
Saturday November, 7th @ 6:00pm
RailRoad Ave. Patchogue, NY
Religious Service to follow at Congregational Church 7:30pm
My family’s wish is to create a new environment of peace and unity for our community. We would like to invite members of all communities to share in the vigil in memory of my dear brother, Marcelo Lucero, on Saturday November 7 at 6pm next to the train station where he lost his life. Following the vigil, we will walk to the Congregational Church of Patchogue located on Main Street for a religious ceremony scheduled for 7:30pm. We request from all who attend to wear a white t-shirt in solidarity to share in this day of peace, healing and hope. Our message is no more violence but peace, no more racism but instead brotherhood and no more abuse rather respect.
During the vigil, we will collect donations for the Marcelo Lucero Scholarship that I created last year for the students of Patchogue-Medford HS and monies will also be used to send a mural to Gualaceo, Ecuador, which was created by Pat-Med students as a symbol of peace. If your organization would like to send a contribution in advance please write checks to: Marcelo Lucero Scholarship and send it directly to the Patchogue-Medford HS, 181 Buffalo Avenue, Medford, New York 11763.
Please be advised that this event will not be used for any political agendas. We would like to thank you in advance for your support and for respecting our wishes.
En Solidarity,
Joselo Lucero and family
A COMMUNITY VIGIL & HEALING SERVICE
IN REMEMBRANCE OF MARCELO LUCERO
There will be a gathering at the site of the murder of Marcelo Lucero at 6pm on Saturday, November 7th. There will be a vigil from there to the Congregational Church of Patchogue, 95 East Main Street where the funeral of Marcelo Lucero was held almost exactly a year ago. At the church at 7:30pm, those coming from the site of Lucero’s death will enter the church for a service of candle-lighting, prayer, a slide show from events of the previous year accompanied by original music, and a time for spiritual reflection on how far we have and have not come in the past year. Live music will be provided by the band, Jack’s Waterfall, which has played at many such healing events in the past year. The Lucero family from New York and Ecuador are expected to be in attendance. The public is warmly invited.
