NEW YORKERS AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY
WWW.NYADP.ORG
“The story of Greg Wilhoit’s astounding journey to Death Row and his release from it is far better than fiction. It is unbelievable, infuriating, depressing, but also inspirational.” — John Grisham
Greg Wilhoit, a central character in John Grisham’s New York Times Bestselling non-fiction book The Innocent Man, was convicted for a murder he did not commit and sentenced to death. His painful experience, which included befriending another wrongfully convicted man on Death Row, resulted in his desire to communicate to others the terrible human consequences of a death penalty system.
“In 1998, when the District Attorney asked me how I felt about him seeking the death penalty for my sister’s and seven other women’s killer, I told him I had never thought much about the death penalty. At that time I couldn’t imagine what, if anything, could bring me comfort or lessen my pain and despair, but I knew it wasn’t that.” – Marie Verzulli
Marie Verzulli is the sister of Catherine Marsh, one of eight women murdered by Kendall Francois. Francois’ murder spree shocked the Hudson Valley town of Poughkeepsie. Both Marie and her mother made victim impact statements at Francois’ sentencing. He was sentenced to life without parole. Marie seeks to strengthen, support, and empower family members of murder victims by sharing her personal story and illustrate that family members of murder victims do not all support the death penalty and that the long legal process surrounding the death penalty can be damaging.
