Gggggrrrr! It is such a shame that our biggest, local newspaper is Newsday, and they cut and ran behind a pay wall. It is really abusive of them to use our elected officials as sources, and take all the privileges of the media, and then force people to pay Newsday, or use their other corporate services to get that information back. Gggggrrrrrr….When does someone fix this injustice/corporate welfare situation?
Anyway, there have been two recent stories in Newsday about the Suffolk County Police. Main points: The Suffolk County police are still under a federal probe exploring their practices relating to immigrants. One of the good things that has come of this is the simple strategy of showing police how to interact better with people who are non-English speaking. What a simple point of culture and humanity – to try to relate to people on their own terms, to try to empathize with people from different cultures, or who speak different languages. It’s a shame everyone had to go through so much to get there. But, at least some police personnel are being better trained to be culturally aware…
