For our New York readers: Below is a hand-crafted list which emphasizes independent and third party options for New Yorkers who want to show their displeasure to the Democrats and Republicans. The list is based on research from Politics1 and the NY State Board of Elections. The candidate blurbs are taken from Politics1.

In NY, winning 50,000 votes for Governor is the only method a group has to become an automatic, ballot status party. Voting third party for Governor helps to build third parties in your community.

Of course, if you are disenchanted with the Democratic Party and Republican Party, and there are no other candidates on the ballot, you can always register your distaste with a write-in. The most strategic write-in is the name of a person who actually resides in the district and is eligible for the office. (Often, yourself, for one!) Though, other write-ins — even silly ones, or statements such as “lower taxes” or “war is bad” — may not always be published, they certainly get read by the Democratic and Republican patronage employees who work at the Boards of Elections around the state.

Note that, in order to help identify the race/district, I listed the major party-aligned candidates, last name only. Though, the emphasis on this list is the voter’s ability to choose an independent or third party option (which other media sometimes bury, or at least hide.) Where you have a third party or independent option directly on the ballot, there is an asterisk next to the district.
